Expérience fantastique: Alliance Française Vancouver is a fantastic place to learn french from professional educators who understand the nuances of teaching a language. My experience with my instructor Phœbé has been so inspiring and encouraging. I also have done the TEF exam there, and I found the exam coordinator to be very respectful and accommodating towards the candidates (not sure if his name unfortunately). The building itself is also very nice and sunny, with a terrace which I love. That’s just an added plus to an amazing education experience. I’ve tried other French language schools in Vancouver, and Alliance Française is on a whole other level in terms of effectiveness of teaching, professionalism, and respect towards their students.

Could you please clarify when they say first week of June what does that mean 1 June Monday and what time ? When I checked in March first week the seats were already full. Expérience négative: Bad Administration and Disappointing Lessons. In January, I took the TCF exam at Alliance Française Vancouver, and my name was misspelled on the score report they sent me. That’s a serious mistake for such an important document. I also signed up for one-on-one lessons. I made it clear from the start that my goal was exam prep, but the first class was basically an hour of casual chatting and not related to the TCF at all. For one-on-one lessons costing CAD 68 an hour, this was a poor use of both my time and money. We only started covering exam content from the second lesson, and even then the advice I received later on wasn’t very professional. In February, I tried calling during business hours to ask course-related questions. I couldn’t get through after several attempts. When I called from a different number, the receptionist confirmed my name and then the call was suddenly hung up. I called back right away and couldn’t reach anyone. As a paying exam candidate and student, I felt I was treated with great contempt and humiliation. After I provided feedback by email about the course quality, the institution eventually refunded the unused lesson fees, but did not refund the CA$50 administrative fee that I had to pay to enroll. Overall, this experience cost me a significant amount of time and money, and it seriously disrupted my ability to prepare efficiently for the exam. I deeply regret enrolling in courses at Alliance Française in the first place. I would strongly discourage anyone from taking courses at Alliance Française Vancouver.

Expérience fantastique: This place is the best I know for learning French and immersing yourself in French culture, from daily life to everything else. The best part is, there's a café with a live bakery!

Expérience négative: The TCF preparation course at Alliance Française Vancouver was very good, and I’m grateful to our teacher, Frederick, who was excellent and very professional. However, the exam registration system is extremely frustrating — the spots disappear within minutes, making it almost impossible to register even when constantly refreshing the page. What is most disappointing is that Alliance Française does not seem to make any effort to increase the number of exam spots despite the obvious demand. As a result, there is no guarantee that candidates will be able to take the exam later this year, especially since there are no alternative places in British Columbia to pass it.

Firstly, they didn't tell the exact date to open the registration to book TCF exam and then suddenly the site was showing spots are available to register but I didn't see any exam date on the site. I was continously trying to book the exam date for 2 hours but was unable to book the exam. And now it's showing "sold out". I don’t no why they don't make the process easy to book test as people have to struggle a lot. Why don't you tell the exact date and time to open registration? Writing only "first week or afternoon" doesn't make any sense at all. People can't be free for whole week and keep an eye to your website 24/7. This is not the place to play games like this.You should be serious and take it to consideration ASAP.

Expérience négative: I'd give them ZERO stars. Very disappointing experience with the TEF Canada registration process. The centre announced that online booking would open during the first week of March (which is the only way to register). However, without clearly communicating the exact date and time of release, all sessions suddenly appeared fully booked until June almost immediately after the website update. The complete LACK OF TRANSPARENCY about when registration would open made it nearly impossible to secure a spot in a fair and predictable manner. Given the high demand and the serious consequences for applicants, clearer communication and a more transparent booking process are absolutely necessary. I hope improvements are made to ensure equal and fair access to future exam sessions.

When you say this week, do I have to stay in front of the computer to check everything 5 minutes? Please be more transparent and consistent. I feel like you guys are going downhill because you guys no longer answering any questions with regard to the TCF exam over the phone.

La politique de votre centre a aggravé l’enjeux auquel les candidats confrontent. Ni objectivité, avec les examinateurs différents les résultats peuvent être totalement différent et en plus, l’existence de ré évaluation montre l’échec Ni fidélité, les candidats peuvent avoir des résultats énormément différent. Surtout contre les asiatiques et les indiens Ni faisabilité, pas assez de Disponibilité ni un horaire juste et fixe pour l’inscription. Cela montre votre incompétence de bien maintenir votre site web. Le plus honteux c’est que vous recevez encore le budget fédéral mais quand même impossible de bien maintenir le site web. Ni équité, dans les commentaires, je peux voir les candidats qui sont discriminés et qui ont reçu un mauvais résultat à l’oral. L’effet de contraste et l’effet de stéréotypes impacte non seulement le résultat mais aussi les destins des immigrants. Ni Validité, même les interlocuteurs maternels ne peuvent pas bien comprendre le sujet de l’écoute et le moyen le plus efficace est de mémoriser la bonne réponse au lieu de vraiment bien comprendre les paroles et choisir la bonne réponse.

Expérience fantastique: My family and I have attended a few events since the opening of the new building, and they have been absolutely fantastic. The building itself is stunning: a beautiful, welcoming space where arts, culture, community and learning can clearly come together. Each event we've attended been thoughtfully organized, engaging and unique — the VR event in November was a big hit with the 5 year old! My kids especially love that they can always pop into the library to check out the books, or stop by the cafe for a quick snack. Alliance Française Vancouver has created something special here — it's neat to see a cultural hub in our city that can bring people together and celebrate French language and culture in such an inclusive way. For parents with school-age kids, I highly recommend attending an event or taking a class here!

Expérience fantastique: This institution is simply amazing! I really love learning French here. The new building is beautiful and I think the prices are competitive. What I like the most is that the courses are well organized and all the professors are native French speakers. Finally, the location is amazing, close to public transit and good amount of parking spots around the building.

Expérience fantastique: I took classes at my workplace provided by Alliance Francaise. Nathan was a great teacher and catered his lessons to our current skill level. The classes were always interesting and engaging, and we all learned a lot!

Expérience négative: Terrible and unfair TEF exam experience. I experienced a technical issue during the Reading section that prevented me from completing it. Despite this, the supervisor immediately started the Listening section and instructed me to continue as if nothing had happened. I did not even have my headphones on. No instruction was provided as to whether the technical problem would be resolved before starting the Listening section. This situation was unfair and highly unprofessional. A technical issue beyond my control directly impacted my exam conditions, and no proper support or corrective measures were offered. What makes this particularly unfair is that TEF procedures only allow repeating the affected section, without considering the psychological and cognitive impact on the remaining parts of the exam. This seriously compromises exam.

It is so important that we support non-profit cultural organizations to help revitalize Vancouver’s social landscape. Expérience négative: This testing center only has two examiners —it's incredibly unfair. Most of us encounter the same two people every time when take the exam. They are extremely strict graders; no matter how hard you work, they always give you a failing score. It feels like this French testing center is just a scam designed to take students' money. This is blatant unfairness. Management needs to implement reforms to ensure fairness, starting with having more than just two examiners.

Expérience positive: Unprofessional management and lack of communication "I am very disappointed with the management at Alliance Française Vancouver. Despite having a signed contract, they frequently change private class schedules without any prior warning. They seem to have no regard for the students' or teachers' schedules. It is difficult to make progress when the school does not honor its own agreements." ... I wrote this review on my wife's behalf. Her name is Caroliny and her teacher, who she really likes, is Han. She is the student currently enrolled, and I have witnessed firsthand her frustration with the constant schedule changes. From my point of view, regardless of 'unforeseen circumstances,' a professional institution must honor the service agreement and schedule we originally signed for.

Expérience fantastique: I've been a student this past term in Han Fei's A2 class at the Alliance Française. She has been the best French teacher I've ever had. I'm quite impressed by her understanding of the things I struggle to grasp going from English to French, and have found some of her lessons in which she teaches things in a slightly different way or order from the textbook to be very helpful and accelerate my learning. I think her (long ago) being a French learner herself has given her insight into the challenges and mistakes often made so she can quickly address them. She clearly is fully fluent and has a deep expertise in French now but can easily reach back to that experience in a way native French speakers I've learned from are unable to.

Expérience négative: My experience with Alliance Française Vancouver was disappointing, particularly regarding the speaking evaluation. I found the assessment process to be biased, especially against non-native speakers. After my speaking test, I interacted with several students who felt they performed well, yet still received unexpectedly low scores. This raised serious concerns about the consistency and fairness of the evaluation. What was especially confusing is that a native French speaker I know spoke for barely one minute and received a C2, while another candidate who spoke clearly, correctly, and for the full required duration did not receive the expected grade. Such inconsistencies make the marking criteria feel unclear and unfair. Over time, it gave the impression that the system is becoming more of a money-making tool, requiring candidates to retake exams repeatedly despite good performance. Additionally, one instructor was particularly unhelpful during the speaking exam. He interrupted candidates mid-exam with questions, which only increased nervousness and negatively impacted performance. This behavior is not supportive and is inappropriate in a high-stakes language exam. Overall, my experience with Alliance Française Vancouver was NOT positive, especially when compared to other institutes. I expected a more transparent, fair, and supportive examination environment.

Expérience fantastique: I had my very first Tcf exam here and it was overall a good experience. Nice and clean building. My examiner Marie (I hope I remembered her name correctly) was so kind and helpful. I was very nervous during my speaking test but her professionalism really helped me feel at ease. I was able to achieve my desired results!

Expérience négative: I only took a 1v1 class but it wasn't great. Their policy for 1v1 is the student needs to pay first, then a teacher is found, which took several weeks. Then the teacher wasn't really able to work with me - no curriculum was provided, no coursework (or book) was followed, so it was basically a series of conversational classes without any structure. I've studied enough languages (Chinese, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese) to know what works for me and what doesn't but they don't seem interested or capable here of either customizing something for a 1v1 student or even following a basic curriculum (if they have one).

This is thanks to the great professors and the helpful, friendly staff. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn French.

Expérience négative: The most aloof, rudest, least pleasant customer service experience by an institution that rips you off at every step and looks down on you every step of the way. I sat my TEF exam there in September - nobody greets you, you stand there waiting for a VERY consequential exam while a gaggle of a few secretaries chatter until finally one of them grudgingly checks you in for the exam you paid $400 for. The written part itself conducted in a stone cold, grey room, no break (that is NOT part of the official directives), with the attendant not even caring to mute her computer transmitting loud notifications. Fast forward to some time later - I decided to give them a second chance and go through the placement test process. Waited 5 DAYS with multiple follow ups while spots were filling up to finally be graced with my results for which I had paid $80. AF - please visit College Educacentre one day, maybe incognito, to see the professionalism and kindness that can be extended towards people in precarious immigration positions sitting a life changing exam. At this point, in this scenario, yoire basically a government office deciding on people’s life paths. It is very sad that you perpetuate the most noxious stereotypes about Francophonie in Canada, which is ironic given the extent to which Francophonie is now on the rise as a colonial instrument of power wielded against immigrants (on MST unceded lands in a province that has absolutely nothing to do with your language). Oh, all my interactions on the phone with your workers were with extremely rude, distracted, unhelpful people. I waited a few months until I finally passed my exam on the second attempt at college Educacentre before I could write this review and breathe a satisfying sigh of relief at the thought of never having to interact with you again. Wishing you more humanity and less capitalist greed:)

Expérience négative: The TEF information on the website is not clear or up to date, and calling the reception does not help in getting accurate details. Each time I called, I was told something different, and none of it turned out to be true. The only accurate statement I received—on the third call—was that they do not have any information about the TEF, which means there is nobody to contact for TEF-related questions. Moreover, TEF dates are extremely limited and fill up quickly. Alliance Francaise does not seem able to keep up with the demand, nor does it appear to be taking steps to adapt or support students who are trying to book exam dates soon. Additionally, if you have made an overpayment or decide not to take a course because the schedule is inconvenient, they will not issue a refund or allow you to transfer the credit to someone else. For example, my partner tried to transfer her account credit to me so I could use it for the exam, but this was not allowed. As a result, she is now obligated to use the credit for something she does not need.

Expérience positive: Hello there, I've been to AF Vancouver two times, both to do the TCF exam. I have no complaints about the first time, everything was organized, the structure itself is amazing and parking is OK, a bit expensive if you need to stay there for the full day, but due its limited parking spots, that maybe justifies the price. My complaints are about the second time I went there for TCF. Everything changed and the new rules were not previously communicated (by the way, communication is really an issue). The AF staff treat you as if they are doing you a favor. Probably the $400 cost for the test does not go to AF, but anyways, that "experience" costs $400 and you expect at least professionalism. Since the beginning I was aware that I was going to complete my “Expression Orale” at the morning and return for the rest of the tests at the afternoon. When I showed up for checking in my first impression was how crowded the place was, as compared to the last time. Initially I thought that was good, as they are accommodating more people for a very demanded test. The front desk person asked for my name and required me to hand over my mobile phone. This was different from the 1st time I did the test, so that was something that made me think for a while. I had my car in the parking lot, so I asked if I could leave my phone in the car instead and she said "no", which was weird. So I asked if I could have my phone back after my oral test at 9:20 AM as I was supposedly returning only at 1 PM, she also said "no". I really could not understand why I could not have my phone to wait for the following part, as I had as well errands to do. I gave my phone to her, really without understanding this unwise rule. After I did my oral test, until I was waiting for the next part of the exam in the afternoon, I noticed that other candidates were able to have their laptops, tablets, and other phones that they might have with them, which made me feel even disappointed with this rule. During the afternoon test, the person responsible for the test made a briefing for that part and made all of us aware that, after the test starts it does not finish. As I had made this test before, I was aware of the format and did not take into consideration that she was talking about the whole afternoon, not only for the automatic part of listening and reading comprehension. As I did the first time, before I could finish the last part (writing), I asked to stretch my legs (due to personal health issues) and go to the washroom, and this request was also denied. This last experience was not the best, and affected my score which clearly was not improved in the exact writing skill - last part of the day - as all others skills were improved when compared to the first time taken. AF Vancouver should improve their communication overall, inform the changed rules in advance per email, and be more courteous to the test takers. Thank you!

Expérience fantastique: I recently took my TCF exam at this centre and I had a very good experience. The exam room was comfortable and everyone, from the staff to the examiners, was super friendly. The speaking evaluator was very supportive and even made a light joke before starting the test, which created a very positive atmosphere. I was also very impressed by the facilities. Everything is beautiful and looks brand new. The computer equipment was excellent, with fast computers and headphones that had clear and high quality sound. Overall, everything was just perfect! It is a 20 out of 20 experience in every way.

All teachers I've had have been very helpful and patient, my only con about the school is registering for your next course is quite confusing. I just now e-mail to ask which one i need next and they happily send me the link. I recommend!

Expérience fantastique: Alliance française is an amazing non profit organization. They are responsive in timely manner. I recently booked a service with them and had an inquiry, Nils, responded to me in a very short amount of time which did put my worries to an ease. They offer multiple services and one of the only services in BC that holds both TEF and TCF. I always had excellent experience whenever i had questions regarding classes or other french services. Their website is very well planned and easy to surf. Overall, great organization.

Expérience négative: I’m very disappointed, even though I successfully passed my course, I wasn’t given any options to continue to the next level. I didn’t receive an email, a message, or any form of communication — instead, I was simply told I had to wait two months for the next session. The front desk staff absolutely didn’t care or offer any solution, the indifference of the staff were very disappointing. It seems that students who failed previous courses were given priority over those who passed and performed well. It honestly feels like the school only cares about filling up classes, without considering the consequences or the frustration this causes to motivated students.

Ils sont probablement la plus ancienne école d'enseignement du français au monde (plus d'un siècle). Cependant, ils continuent de mettre à jour leurs méthodes et leurs livres. Now, I’ll have to tell him the unfortunate news and it is a bit heartbreaking. They should’ve found a way to make it work. Anyway , I got the full refund but I was really looking forward to letting my kid learn French.

Expérience fantastique: I went to the Alliance Française and their building and library were amazing. I read on the Daily Hive Vancouver that, it is the third-largest Alliance Française building in North America after Toronto and New York City.

The areas in its building are very comfortable and its welcoming staff offers a varied, accessible and affordable set of resources for many people. Activities and events are inclusive and very fun to attend to! I loved Fête de la musique and their new theatre!

She saw that I was nervous during my speaking test so she asked me to breathe and relax, and after my exam was over, we had a friendly little conversation in French. Thank you Alliance Française for accommodating me!

Expérience fantastique: The new Alliance Francaise building at 6161 Cambie is amazing. Parking underneath, large gathering and catering space in the lobby and a wonderful theatre for smaller events. The concert by Quatuor Elysee was excellent and I am grateful for the opportunity to have visited this space. Hopefully I will attend many more events at AF!!

Expérience fantastique: I sent an email casually on a Sunday afternoon, expecting a response sometime during the week. To my surprise, I received a reply within just two hours that same Sunday. Truly exceptional responsiveness and professionalism!

Expérience fantastique: Over the past few months I have had 12, perhaps 15 to 18 dealings with the staff at the Alliance Francaise de Vancouver, and in every case I was more than satisfied with their help, courtesy and attention to the details of my particular requirements. First I had to register for a French exam, second I had to sit the exam and finally I had to make arrangements for the exam results (a diploma) to be sent by registered mail from Vancouver to my home in Penticton. To repeat, at every step, I was received nothing but help and courtesy. In short, a professional organization. Bravo et merci, l'Alliance.

Expérience fantastique: Excellent organization for all levels French to finally achieve that goal of becoming profiicient in the French language. Signing up for a course is easy and you are guided through with taking an assessment quiz and then an oral assessment with a french teacher for a very small fee of $20. I was thrilled to learn that I'm now intermediate from complete beginner and to have the recommended course to sign up for rather than trying to figure it out myself. Staff are friendly and offer a helping hand whether it's a quick question about when classes start or more in-depth. They assist in the process and are a pleasure to deal with. In my french oral assessment, the French teacher was very clear in her instructions and questions and also very encouraging which helped me recall a lot of my French skill to respond. I also like that Alliance Francaise offers courses in person and by zoom so there is an option for everyone's needs. Alliance Francaise Vancouver is my go to organization for all things French, including if I want to take French in Paris. They are a fantastic organization and I have no doubt I will meet my goal of becoming fluent in french easily with them!
